A Kababayang Pilipino Story
In 1993, a group of university students had a vision: to bring together individuals with a common purpose and to find a medium in which they could display the rich heritage and history of the Philippines. And on this journey of cultural self discovery, the artists and individuals who compose the group have not only uncovered knowledge of their heritage, but have gained insight into the power of group work, dedication, passion and most importantly, truths about themselves and their identity.
Since its humble beginnings, Kababayang Pilipino has grown, wowing its audiences with the cultural splendor and beauty of the Philippines through its presentation of the traditional folk arts forms of dance and music. Composed of over 40 performing artists, this highly accomplished and critically acclaimed company has performed throughout British Columbia, Alberta, Washington, California, and at international dance festivals in Belgium, Italy and Portugal.
Under the direction of Randy Romero (2018), Kababayang Pilipino continues to push the boundaries, taking what is essentially folk and making it contemporary and relevant. From its desire to discovering new horizons, while committing to preserving the authenticity of its presentations, Kababayang Pilipino, while always looking back to its new roots, continues to propel itself forward as one of the premiere Philippine folk dance companies in Canada.
Through the dedication and vision of its members, the group has grown into what it is today, which is an outstanding cultural performing arts company dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the Philippine culture and history. Praised for “its desire to promote deeper understanding of the Filipino spirit”, its performances not only display the finest in Philippine dance, but also serve to inspire its audiences to take pride in their heritage, whether or not it be a Filipino one.
Kababayang Pilipino of British Columbia is a cultural performing arts group dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the Filipino folk heritage through the presentation of authentic Filipino dance, music, song and drama.
Kababayang Pilipino provides the opportunity for its members to educate themselves and in turn, educate the community at large about the rich history and culture of the Filipino.
What began as a determined effort by a dedicated few has become an important vessel of Filipino culture in British Columbia’s vibrant ethnic community. Moreover, Kababayang Pilipino’s target membership, young people who seek a greater understanding of the Philippines and her people, continues to be enriched by the unique social, cultural, and artistic dynamic offered by this organization.
Conceived for youth, by youth, Kababayang Pilipino is ever inspired by each new generation of young people who are eager to discover something of themselves by learning something of the Filipino people to which they are tied in culture, bound in hearth and indelibly marked in spirit.
