Vancouver, BC, Canada (May 2013): Internationally recognized Filipino performing folk arts group, Kababayang Pilipino (“KP”) celebrates its 20th year anniversary in a special commemorative presentation, “Kinabukasan” on June 15th and 16th, 2013 at the Vancouver Playhouse in Vancouver. The Vancouver based group will showcase the beloved folk dances and music of the Philippines, a country that features a broad spectrum of dance styles and influences including indigenous, Arabic-Malayan, Spanish and western vestiges.
“Kinabukasan” is a nod to the future. “Kinabukasan”, literally translated as “tomorrow” will give its audience a fresh look at Philippine traditional dance and music. New work will premiere on Canadian stage such as dances from the Manobo of Mindanao and the Tagbanua of Palawan. These indigenous dances are considered pre-Muslim and pre-Spanish rule, casting itself as part of the Philippines’ “original” suite of dances.
“Kinabukasan” will also prominently feature the future on stage with the young artists of the group, with kids from the ages of 5 to 17. “This next generation of young artists are the key to preserving and promoting the Philippine culture, which is KP’s mission” says Randy Romero, Artistic Director.
With an ensemble of over 75 members comprised mainly of first generation Filipinos, Kababayang Pilipino is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the Filipino folk heritage through its presentation of dance and music. Conceived for youth, by youth, this vibrant group provides the opportunity for its members to educate themselves and in turn, educate the community at large about the rich history and culture of the Filipino.
