Co.ERASGA’s Alvin Erasga Tolentino will contribute a new solo work performed by himself, entitled "meeting umbuh" recently premiered in Otawa’s “B.C. Scene Celebration of Artists”. A renowned soloist for his hybrid and diverse creation and performance, Tolentino has presented dances across the globe.Kababayang Pilipino will also be debuting a new work entitled “Habi”, inspired by the indigenous people, collectively called the Lumads.  “Habi”, a Tagalog word literally translated as “to weave”, is an expression of the melting pot of cultures that is representative of Mindanao. This includes Pangalay, which is the traditional "fingernail" dance of the Tausūg people of the Sulu Archipelago and Sabah. This dance is the most distinctively Asian of all the Southern Philippine dances because dancers must have dexterity and flexibility of the shoulders, elbows, and wrists – movements that strongly resemble those of "kontaw silat," a martial art common in the Malay Archipelago.Workshop participants will be introduced to the movements specific to a particular dance of the Yakan tribe of Mindanao, Pangsat/Pindulas, a courtship dance. Pindulas refers to the Yakan newlyweds dance. Kababayang Pilipino will be one aspect of the many Asian performances highlighted to perform in this celebration of Asian arts and culture.The annual New Moon Festival provides an opportunity for Asians living on the coast to display pride in their heritage. For the community at large, the New Moon will be entertaining, informative and fun for all ages.  As always, local artists and artisans will exhibit their unique work while the community can enjoy lantern-making and Asian crafts for all ages.  The lantern procession will commence just after dusk, followed by a world premiere production by Mind of a Snail Shadow Puppetry.  A variety of Asian food will be available for sale, so dress for the weather and spend the day! (Source: http://www.carouselpinoy.com/joeycaroustar.html)   Critically-acclaimed classical guitarist Florante Aguilar is considered one of the leading proponents of Philippine harana music in America today.  His true love and affinity belongs to the music he grew up with in the Philippines - the music of a bygone era called the harana.  Born in Manila, Florante grew up in Cavite province where he learned to play the octavina in a rondalla group.  At an early age, he picked up the guitar by way of rock and roll and by sixteen was enrolled at the University of the Philippines College of Music where he was trained as a classical musician.  In 1985, Florante toured Europe, United States and Asia for 6 1/2 months performing in major cities both as a soloist and ensemble player.  Later, he moved to New York under a scholarship to study at the Manhattan School of Music with Sharon Isbin, Grammy Award winner and current guitar department chair of the Juilliard School.  Florante received his Bachelor of Music Degree at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 1996 under the tutelage of David Tanenbaum.
