Artistic Staff

Under the direction of Randy Romero, the team that makes up Kababayang Pilipino’s Artistic Staff is responsible for the audition process, training, choreography, design, music and execution of its mainstage performances—the overall vision for the folk dance company.

Randy Romero
Randy Romero (Artistic Director/Choreographer)

A lover of the performing arts, Randy has been dancing and singing since the age of 3.  Introduced to the folk arts at an early age, he has been involved with various folk dance groups in Saskatchewan and in the Greater Vancouver area, and in 1993, he was instrumental in the founding and establishment of Kababayang Pilipino of British Columbia, which is now the premiere Filipino folk dance companies in Canada. Since the beginning, he has served as its Artistic Director/Choreographer, and has directed all of its main stage productions to date. His artistic vision is defined by his thirst for new interpretations and by his desire to continue to raise awareness of the beauty and diversity of traditional Filipino folk dance movement.

Rodney Romero
Rodney Romero (Musical Director, Musician)

Rodney has been performing his native folk dances from an early age, and is one of its founding members. His talents range from principal dancer to ethnic instrumentalist/percussion to rondalla maestro. Largely self-taught, his passion for learning and goal of perfecting his craft has been instrumental to the group and its growth. Rodney is a graduate of BCIT and VFS, and works for a local plastics firm.

Cristina Pernia
Cristina Pernia (Musical Director, Musician, Dancer)

After several years of volunteering at KP events, Cristina Pernia officially joined KP in 1998 as one of the inaugural members of KP’s Rondalla. Having been playing the piano since she was seven (thanks mom), Cristina has always had a passion for music; so it seemed only fitting to put her musical background to good use. Cristina has been a proud member of KP’s Rondalla & Percussion ensemble ever since.  Her favorite suites are Spanish and Muslim (the music, the costumes, the grace...it’s all breathtaking), and her all-time favorite piece to perform is Habanera Jovencita (with Usahay a close second). Next on Cristina’s to-do list with KP - dancing.

Rudi C. Soriano
Rudi C. Soriano (Dance Consultant / Advisor)

Rudi has an extensive background and expertise in traditional Filipino movement, and founded the LIKHA Pilipino Folk Ensemble in 1992. A former soloist with the Bayanihan Philippine Dance Company in Manila, Rudi also trained with Alice Reyes Cultural Center of the Philippines Dance Company. In Paris, Rudi studied under Lianne Dayde of Paris Opera Ballet and trained with Rosella Hightower’s modern dance company in Cannes, France. Rudi choreographed "Budong, Peace Pact" for the Gay Asian Pacific Alliance Dance Company in 1993, as well as dance pieces for San Francisco State University’s Pilipino American Collegiate Endeavor (PACE), UC Berkeley’s Pilipino American Association (PAA), and UC Santa Cruz’s Filipino Student Association (FSA). Rudi was recently honored in 2001 with the Pilipino community’s Pamana Award for Folk Dance Arts Education. KP has shared a strong relationship with Mr.  Soriano since its first collaboration with Likha in 1995.

Jun Gomez
Jun Gomez (Guest Technical Director)

Based in the Philippines and the U.S., Jun has served as the resident technical director for the world famous Bayanihan Philippine Dance Company in Manila and abroad as well as for our special guest artists, LIKHA. KP was very honored to have Jun serve as guest technical director for its 2005 Season production, "Pagsilang", held at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver, BC.
